1. PGWP Eligibility For public-private college students
As of September 2024, international students enrolling in private colleges will not be eligible for a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)
Students currently enrolled in those institutes will still be eligible for Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) if they meet program criteria.
2. Post-graduation work permit (PGWP) extension for graduates of master’s degree programs
As of February 14, 2024 Students who have completed programs lasting a minimum of two years at designated learning institutions eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) are entitled to a three-year permit. Additionally, graduates of master's degree programs that are shorter than two years also qualify for this three-year PGWP.
3. Change in spouses open work permit eligibility
Only spouses and common-law partners of students in graduate and professional degree programs are eligible for PGWP. Those seeking to extend their work permits will remain eligible under this stream.
Spouses and common-law partners of international students in lower-level programs won't qualify for an open work permit, except if they already have one.
4. Cap on Study Permit (temporary)
The Canadian government plans to decrease the number of approved study permits in 2024. The cap for 2024 is set at 360,000, with the limit for 2025 yet to be determined.
